BEREA, Ohio -- Current Panthers receiver Robby Anderson and former Panthers receiver Steve Smith had to be happier than anyone on Friday night when trade talks between the Browns and Carolina for Baker Mayfield broke off.
At this point, the talks for Mayfield are dead in the water and have little chance of being revived, the source said. But as Browns fans know full well in the wake of the Deshaun Watson trade, never say never. The Panthers -- and other teams interested in Mayfield -- don’t want to pay the entire salary, and the Browns don’t want to foot much of the bill.
The Falcons, one of three teams who lost out to the Browns in the Watson sweepstakes along with Carolina and New Orleans, drafted Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder in the third round.
