Baldur’s Gate 3 should have used the 4e D&D rules.
The combat of Baldur’s Gate 3 leans heavily into environmental interaction, with options to push enemies into pits and other hazards, but the 5e Dungeons & Dragons rules are the wrong fit for this focus, since 4e DnD offered more dynamic movement powers. Being able to defeat foes using the environment, instead of just spells and weapons, is a trademark of the game's developer, Larian Studios.
Seeing the Shove action yield tangible benefits in Baldur’s Gate 3 is a sad reminder of how much better Larian’s DnD game could have been with a rule set that compliments its strengths as a developer. Additionally, BG3 caps out at level 12, in part due to the distinct differences between high-level abilities in 5e DnD and those available at low to mid-levels.
