The age rating for Barbie has now officially been revealed, confirming that the film, despite being about a toy, isn’t entirely kid-friendly.
Barbie's age rating has been revealed, confirming that the Greta Gerwig-directed movie isn't entirely for kids. Starring Margot Robbie as the iconic Mattel doll, the upcoming film follows the toy as she is kicked out of Barbie Land and embarks on an adventure in the real world with Ken . Trailers for the movie have already revealed that, while there will be a lot of laughs to be had, the film will also explore some deeper, more existential themes.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Now, ahead of the Barbie release date next month, FilmRatings.com has revealed the film to be rated PG-13. The rating is perhaps somewhat surprising given that the movie is based on a children's toy. Barbie earned the rating for "suggestive references and brief language," however, which does suggest that it could be more of a "soft" PG-13 than something that is on the cusp of being rated R.
What Barbie's PG-13 Rating Means For The Film While not an entirely unexpected rating, the PG-13 designation does speak to the fact that Barbie is not a film really aimed at children. Trailers for Barbie have potentially already teased some of the "suggestive references" mentioned in the rating, with Gosling's Ken and Simu Liu's Ken getting into an argument and repeatedly saying variations of "I would beach you off".
Another moment in an earlier teaser sees Kate McKinnon's Barbie doing the splits and seemingly looking under Robbie's Barbie dress. This could be a reference to the fact that actual Mattel Barbie dolls don't have any genitalia. Robbie's character, however, as trailers show, starts to exhibit several characteristics that are decidedly un-Barbie, which eventually results in her leaving for the Real World.
In many ways, PG-13 seems like the perfect age rating for Gerwig's Barbie. This will allow the film to appeal to a wide range of audiences, with humor and themes that adults will appreciate while also having elements that younger viewers can enjoy as well. Anticipation for Barbie continues to grow, and audiences now thankfully only have just over a month to wait before the movie hits theaters.
