BART closes South Hayward station after substation fire

HAYWARD — BART officials reopened the system’s South Hayward station after a fire broke out at a nearby electrical substation Tuesday evening forced its closure for nearly three hours, authorities said.

A commuter said she had just exited the station and reached her car in a parking lot when she noticed smoke rising from a parking lot on the station’s other side. Station staff were turning back trains along the Berryessa line at Hayward and Union City stations, with mutual-aid service provided by AC Transit’s No. 99 line between Hayward, South Hayward and Union City stations, according to BART spokesman Chris Filippi said at 6:30 p.m.

Around 9:10 p.m., BART said the station had reopened to regular train travel, with residual delays slowly easing.
