Singapore authorities have issued warnings to stallholders at Beauty World Food Centre following the discovery of a suspected rodent infestation. The National Environment Agency (NEA) and the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) have urged stallholders to improve hygiene and food safety practices to prevent further issues.

Recent reports of rats being sighted in Beauty World Food Centre prompted the National Environment Agency (NEA) to conduct an inspection of the premises. Authorities have urged stallholders at the food centre to enhance their hygiene and food safety practices following a suspected rodent infestation.

In a joint statement released on Saturday, February 1st, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and NEA instructed stallholders to properly dispose of food waste and maintain clean stalls, free of food scraps, to prevent easy access to food for rats. Recent reports of rat sightings led the NEA to inspect the premises, as reported by The Straits Times. On January 23rd, the building management sent a letter to stallholders informing them that the NEA had discovered 'extensive rodent droppings' throughout the property. 'This poses a serious hygiene risk, especially since food is being served in the hawker centre,' they explained. The building management also instructed stall owners to 'eliminate potential food sources and breeding grounds' and to remove all their items from common areas in order to stop any rodent activity. The authorities stated that preliminary inspections revealed evidence of 'rat harbourage' — conditions that provide rats with food, shelter, or protection, allowing them to multiply and thrive — in the food centre's ceiling and communal spaces. Infestations of house mice and roof rats are typically a result of inadequate waste management, poor housekeeping habits, or gaps in walls caused by wear and tear. Stallholders and owners of premises who violate public health regulations by failing to properly manage their waste or by creating an environment conducive to the harboring or propagation of rats may face fines of up to $20,000, imprisonment for up to three months, or both, if it is their first offense
