Vietnam is expected to continue to balance its ties with the major powers, particularly China and the US, say analysts.

Mr Trong served three terms as the Communist Party of Vietnam’s general secretary until he died of illness at the age of 80 on July 19. China has been Vietnam’s largest trading partner for 20 years. Two-way trade reached US$112.2 billion in the first seven months of 2024, up by 25 per cent year on year.
Bloomberg reported that Mr Lam is scheduled to attend the UN General Assembly in the US in September, and could meet Mr Biden.
