Our culture places enormous value on being coupled up, and regards singledom as an undesirable. It’s hard not to internalise this, no matter how happy you may be.

I caught up with my gorgeous, long-term single friend the day after she’d attended a party.

When you would quite like to find love, being single can feel like a failure. It doesn’t mean that you’re not happy in your life, and it doesn’t mean that you’re not happy in yourself. But when you want something and you can’t get it – a good job, a smaller body, a higher income, or a nice boyfriend – the failure to achieve it can feel like a failure of self.

It’s useful to understand the stigma, but it doesn’t always help when those dark moments descend, and it seems as though everyone is winning the game of love but you.Firstly, you can remind yourself that, in fact, not everyone is happily paired up. Forget the Instagram pics. Forget the happy snaps on Facebook. Relationships are hard, and marriage is harder, and very few people are living perfect lives.
