who has won both a Nobel and Pulitzer Prize, has died at 88. She passed away on Monday night in New York after a short illness, confirmed her publisher, Knopf.
Morrison’s family released a statement today: “She was an extremely devoted mother, grandmother, and aunt who reveled in being with her family and friends. The consummate writer who treasured the written word, whether her own, her students, or others, she read voraciously and was most at home when writing. Although her passing represents a tremendous loss, we are grateful she had a long, well-lived life.
Morrison was born in a steel town in Ohio in the 1930s during the Great Depression. In the ’60s, she moved to upstate New York, where Morrison began her career in literature as an editor at Random House. She was the first female African American editor in the publishing house’s history, from 1967 to 1983; she was also committed to working with, and publishing, writers of color.
Following her time as an editor, Morrison began writing her own novels, which touched on themes such as racism, slavery, and more aspects of African American history. One of her most famous works to date is “The Bluest Eye,” which was inspired by a fellow friend who told her she wanted blue eyes. “Implicit in her desire was racial self-loathing,”.
