Shang De Vegetarian, a popular vegetarian stall in Singapore, had to close its doors after over 10 years of operation due to a significant increase in rental rates. The elderly owner, Leo Shang De, shared his struggles with the rising costs and his plans to seek a new stall.
A long-standing vegetarian stall in Singapore , Shang De Vegetarian , has closed its doors after over a decade of service. The closure was prompted by a significant increase in rental rates, more than threefold, imposed by the new operator of the coffee shop where the stall was located. 76-year-old Leo Shang De, who ran the stall with his wife, explained that the previous rent was already barely enough to cover their expenses, and the new rate was simply unsustainable.
Despite clearing the stall by February 26th, two days ahead of the deadline set by the previous operator, Mr. Leo was denied a two-day refund on his rent. However, the new operator stepped in and generously provided Mr. Leo with the refund amount, demonstrating compassion and support during this difficult transition.Mr. Leo and his wife are not retiring from the food industry entirely. They plan to take a short break before seeking a new stall, possibly at a government-owned hawker center, to continue their culinary journey. The couple's vegetarian stall had gained a loyal following, including Pritam Singh, the leader of the Workers' Party, who praised their food in a social media post. Before settling in Singapore, Mr. Leo had run a restaurant in Denmark for over a decade, showcasing his culinary expertise and adaptability across different cultures. Mr. Leo's story highlights the challenges faced by small businesses, particularly hawkers, in the evolving Singaporean food scene. Rising rental costs and pressure from new operators can force long-standing establishments to close, impacting local communities and culinary diversity. The support shown by the new operator in this instance offers a glimmer of hope and underscores the importance of compassion and understanding within the business community
