The natural disaster that destroyed more than 630 structures 100 years ago remains the city’s worst.
I’ll give an illustrated talk about the fire — what Berkeley was like beforehand, the dramatic events on the day of the fire itself and its aftermath — at 7 p.m. Sept. 14. The cost is $15, and the talk is sponsored by the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association.
Shelby Kendrick, my BAHA board colleague who is also a University of California graduate student in architectural history, will give an informative illustrated talk Monday on Zoom about how the 1923 fire changed Berkeley architecture. The city of Berkeley will also have a community event to commemorate the fire on Sept. 17 and to publicize future fire prevention, and the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association will hold its annual house tour in the fire area, featuring houses that survived the fire and others built soon after. More details about those events will come next week.
Other Berkeley residents were also waiting for news of friends or relatives who had been in Japan. Frequently mentioned in the White community were business and missionary families. For days after the quake the paper carried updates on messages from survivors sent from Japan. The Gazette reported that Berkeley businessman Frank L. Naylor, age 50, died suddenly Sept. 3, 1923, on a camping trip near Big Sur.
