EL PASO, Texas — It has taken less than a week for Beto O’Rourke to turn a rented Dodge Grand Caravan into the seal of his presidential campaign, driving himself to rallies and meet-and-greets across the Rust Belt and on to New Hampshire.
In 1983, sheriff’s deputies installing a two-way radio inside the vehicle found a condom containing a white powdery substance in the glove compartment. A sheriff’s captain later said he ordered the substance destroyed because he thought it was planted, according to news accounts at the time, and the captain was acquitted of tampering with evidence following a trial.
“I was convinced at a very early age I wanted no part of public life,” O’Rourke said at an event here recently. poster="http://v.politico.com/images/1155968404/201903/3777/1155968404_6015383969001_6015373855001-vs.jpg?pubId=1155968404"The family still owned the 4X4 when Pat O’Rourke was struck by a car and killed while riding a recumbent bicycle outside El Paso in 2001. Several years later, his son sold the Land Cruiser, and by the time the younger O’Rourke ran for a Senate seat last year, his tastes had evolved.
