Why the global obsession with millennial colors, which skew neither masculine nor feminine, is here to stay
Faucets, hoses, straws, all in a profusion of pastels not seen since the 1950s. But these hues are strategically murky—neither feminine nor masculine—to please a non-binary generationPINK WAS FEELING lonely. In 2014, India Mahdavi’s slightly grayed-out blush design for London’s Sketch restaurant fired a shot across the bow of traditional neutrals like navy and tan.
Since then, the muted hue has shown up in myriad interiors, flattered skin tones across social media, and tinted products from vases to linens. It was inevitable that a complementary color scheme would evolve around the millennial generation’s It color, said Laura Guido-Clark, a Berkeley, Calif. designer and color expert whose clients include Samsung and Herman Miller.
