BEIJING: Top White House aide Jake Sullivan raised the importance of stability in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea while planning more direct military talks in a rare one-on-one with a senior Chinese army official Thursday (Aug 29), Washington said.

BEIJING: Top White House aide Jake Sullivan raised the importance of stability in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea while planning more direct military talks in a rare one-on-one with a senior Chinese army official Thursday , Washington said.

"Given the state of the world and the need for us to responsibly manage the US-China relationship, I think this is a very important meeting." The two officials also agreed to hold a call between the two sides' theatre commanders"in the near future", a readout from the White House added. Wang and Sullivan previously met five times over the past year and a half - in Washington, Vienna, Malta and Bangkok, as well as alongside Biden and Xi in Woodside, California in November 2023.

Wang stressed that Taiwan belonged to Beijing and that China would"certainly be unified", adding that the United States should stop arming Taiwan, according to CCTV.
