Joe Biden lit into President Donald Trump on Wednesday, assailing his moral compass and asserting that the president “has publicly and unapologetically embraced a political strategy of hate, racism and division.”

It’s not “that far at all” of a line from Trump’s language when discussing undocumented immigrants and neo-Nazi protesters in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017 to various mass shootings throughout his presidency, Biden told the crowd. Biden on Wednesday appeared to have shifted some in his usual rhetoric about the president, moving away from previous assertions that Trump’s rise within the Republican Party was a flash in the pan that would disappear if he lost reelection. Decrying the “American carnage” the president promised he would put an end to in his inaugural address, Biden deployed a gloomy prognosis of his own.
