WASHINGTON - US President Joe Biden said in an interview broadcast Sunday that US forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.
Asked in a CBS 60 Minutes interview if US forces would defend the self-ruled island claimed by China, he replied:"Yes, if in fact, there was an unprecedented attack." Asked to clarify if he meant that unlike in Ukraine, US forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, Mr Biden replied:"Yes."Those remarks came as a surprise departure from decades of US policy that has warned China against using force in Taiwan, but has remained vague about the extent to which it would defend the island."Our policy has not changed.
The official added:"He also reiterated our commitment under the Taiwan Relations Act to provide Taiwan with the military means to defend itself."
