The Big Ten acknowledged the errors made in the final seconds of Rutgers' controversial loss to Ohio State on Friday.
in Columbus on Thursday, but the league did acknowledge the mistakes made during the controversial ending in a conversation with head coach Steve Pikiell on Friday, he confirmed to NJ Advance Media. The Big Ten has not released a public statement on the matter. In regards to the potential aftermath to the error, former Big Ten coordinator of officials Rick Boyages told NJ Advance Media that the possibilities “run the gamut.
“There could be anything from a game suspension to a public reprimand where they mention them by name in a statement to a reprimand where they say they screwed up but don’t mention their name or it could be nothing and they internally tell the AD and the coach that they missed it,” he said. “If they didn’t know the rule about running in and out of bounds, there could be disciplinary stuff, but that happens so rarely and I don’t think any of the refs saw it.
Freshman guard Brice Sensebaugh rebounded the miss and passed it to teammate Bruce Thornton, who dribbled into McConnell and appeared to step out of bounds with his right foot. Nearby official Roger Ayres did not blow his whistle, allowing Thornton to pass to Holden, who hit the game-winner that sent the home crowd into a frenzy. Thornton himself also stepped out of bounds before receiving the ball and shooting, which is another violation that was not called.
No replay of the shot was shown on ESPN2, which immediately cut to the Colorado State-Colorado game. Watch the play
