A Senate panel on Thursday moved Florida one step closer to allowing people to carry concealed firearms without licenses, as critics on opposite sides took aim at the proposal.

The Senate Fiscal Policy Committee voted 13-6 along party lines to approve the bill , which is now ready for consideration by the full Senate. Senate sponsor Jay Collins, R-Tampa, said minor changes Thursday made the bill identical to a House version , which is poised to go to the full House.“On one hand, we have people who feel the gun is the problem.

“That training, if you go check it out, is not going to make anyone a sharpshooter or gun expert,” Collins said. Several members of the group Moms Demand Action, which was formed after the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut, opposed the bill at Thursday’s meeting. But some gun-rights advocates dispute the “constitutional carry” label and say the bill should go further by allowing “open carry,” which would not require firearms to be concealed.
