The complaint, as seen in court documents, claims that Guzzini had bought the artwork in June 2017, Guzzini from London art dealer Inigo Philbrick for $6 million . Speaking at the Venice biennale, New York Times critic Roberta Smith described the artist, Stingel in 2013 as “among the great anti-painting painters of our age” and “a descendant of Warhol.”
Another investment group FAP GmbH says it agreed to purchase the piece a month later, in February 2016 from Philbrick but court documents claim “title to the Stingel was to pass only upon final payment of the full purchase price by FAP to Philbrick.” The documents claim, “Pesko never paid Philbrick for the 50% interest in the Stingel,” and according to rules set by the auction house, “Pesko had no ownership interest in the Stingel.
