In hopes of Netflix green lighting a The Sandman season 2, Neil Gaiman urges fans to binge season 1. The Sandman is based on Neil Gaiman’s beloved graphic novel series of the same name. The show currently has one season with 11 episodes, all available for streaming on Netflix. The Sandman stars Tom Sturridge, Boyd Holbrook, Patton Oswalt, David Thewlis, John Cameron Mitchell, and Gwendoline Christie.
The Sandman has gotten relatively positive reception. According to fans and critics alike, the series stays fairly close to its source content. It introduces some key characters from the comics, immersing viewers into the realm of The Dreaming, and the mystical characters that inhabit it. This eleven episode sampling, however, is only a modicum of the world that Gaiman has in store for viewers if given the chance.
It seems hard to believe that Netflix would cancel The Sandman after just one season. Some viewers have been waiting for this adaptation for years at this point. The Sandman comics were first released in 1989, introducing a compelling fantasy world with a myriad of possibilities. However, in recent years, a strong fan base with great potential, as The Sandman has, is not enough for Netflix. They seem to take the numbers and show’s continued momentum extremely seriously.
If viewers follow Gaiman’s suggestion, however, The Sandman could avoid confronting a similar fate to First Kill and countless other Netflix shows. What The Sandman needs right now is continued viewership, and the fastest way to gain that continued viewership in the way that the numbers care about will be to do just what Gaiman says and binge the show. If The Sandman’s numbers go in their favor, Netflix could make a decision on The Sandman season 2 soon.
