Without a clear determination of the cause of the tragic Ethiopian Airlines crash, the rush by regulators and airlines to ground the Boeing 737 MAX has been based on a loss of confidence and an abundance of caution rather than technical evidence

on Sunday, the rush by national regulators and airlines to ground the Boeing 737 MAX has been based on a loss of confidence and an abundance of caution rather than technical evidence. This creates a difficult path to get the planes back in the air.

"External reports are drawing similarities between this accident and the Lion Air Flight 610 accident on October 29, 2018. However, this investigation has just begun and to date we have not been provided data to draw any conclusions or take any actions." Boeing’s completion of the flight control system enhancements, which provide reduced reliance on procedures associated with required pilot memory items. The FAA anticipates mandating these design changes by AD no later than April 2019.Beyond enhancing the MCAS aircraft software to make these rare events easier for pilots to manage if they occur, Boeing will update training and manuals to reflect the new system functions.

Also, come the Boeing software fix in April, there will be no clear way of knowing whether that fix addresses any potential problems with flying the Boeing 737 MAX better than the previous AD did. The software fix is based on the assumption that some pilots may be confused by the procedures to manage erroneous AOA inputs. That assumption has no basis in accident findings—investigations are still ongoing. This is not to say that global regulators are acting inappropriately.

How can the FAA and Boeing pivot now to address the perception of fault? How can they come back with a fix–other than the fix already proposed–that will reassure airlines, passengers, and regulators in future that the yet unproven danger is passed? The public may accept this travel disruption in exchange for greater confidence in airline operations, as will airline staff. Flight attendant unions have asked American Airlines to ground these planes.
