Several inches of snow fell in Big Cottonwood Canyon's community of Brighton on Thursday as residents expressed excitement for getting snow leading up to the winter months.Last year's historic snowpack brought numerous challenges to mountain communities like Brighton, including structural collapses and what proved to be both deadly and dangerous roof collapses.
Mayor Dan Knopp acknowledged the chaos caused by roadside parking issues and traffic congestion, prompting necessary changes this year. To address the problem, the north side of the road is designated as a no-parking zone, and reserved parking spaces will be implemented, according to Mayor Knopp., safety measures have been enhanced. The mayor also mentioned ongoing efforts to bury power lines to prevent outages during heavy snowfall.
Both Knopp and Cameron stressed the variability of mountain weather, reminding residents to be prepared, flexible, and in awe of nature's beauty. The Utah Department of Transportation actively monitors the canyon and had plows out as the snow fell. A UDOT spokesman told 2News the October storm was a good trial run for crews and the equipment ahead of the winter season.
