MIT CSAIL's program offers inmates a chance to learn new skills, build self-esteem, and prepare for a life beyond prison.
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Laboratory conducted a 12-week college-accredited web design class for inmates of five correctional facilities in the US. The training program, which was conducted virtually, aimed to improve the inmates’ self-efficacy and digital literacy.
Studies have shown that academic accomplishments during prison time improve inmate self-efficacy, increase the likelihood of finding employment post-release, and reduce the chances of returning to prison. Therefore, researchers at MIT CSAIL conducted 12-week courses to improve digital literacy among inmates, dubbed Brave Behind Bars.
In the following six weeks, each student worked on a project using their skills to design a website on a social issue that impacted their community. A sample of this is shown below.
