Before he went on to win a Golden Globe for his role in Succession, Brian Cox had quite a moment with a member of the royal family
nearly everyone has a story to tell. Cox’s story is a bit more, er, physical than most. “You know, when I was a young actor I was touched up by Princess Margaret,” he said to his interviewer. He continued:
I was at the Royal Court. I was doing a play with Alan Bates and it was my 23rd birthday and I’d been given a red shirt from Lindsay Anderson. I’d just washed my hair so I was sort of glistening, heh heh heh, and I walked in and was introduced to her. She put her fingers on my shirt, and said: ‘This is a lovely shirt.’ And she started to run her fingers down the inside of my shirt.
It seems that his interaction with Margaret left Cox with no ill will towards the royal family, but that’s not for sure. In 2002, ten months after Margaret died, Cox turned down the honor of a knighthood, “as he did not agree with the honours system,” according toHe did agree to become a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, which is two rungs further down.
