Destined to be a media mogul, Roberts became CEO of Comcast in 2003, taking over from co-founder dad Ralph Roberts and turning it into a media empire. His zeal to grow the company was demonstrated by his aggressive 11th-hour counteroffer against Disney for 21st Century Fox assets, losing in the end but driving up the price for his rival.
Now he’s locked in battle over Sky, the U.K. satellite platform Disney also hopes to acquire as part of the Fox transaction. Under Roberts, Comcast has grown through acquisitions of cable systems and content assets — AT&T Broadband in 2001, NBCUniversal in 2011 and DreamWorks Animation in 2016. Since he was named president in 1990, annual revenues soared from $657 million to $80 billion in 2016.
