Hartwig Fischer, who has led the storied British Museum for the last eight years, abruptly resigned following a bungled investigation into the theft of 2,000 antiquities
n his resignation statement. “It is evident that the British Museum did not respond as comprehensively as it should have in response to the warnings in 2021, and to the problem that has now fully emerged. The responsibility for that failure must ultimately rest with the director.”
A senior curator was blamed for the theft. A man has been interviewed by London’s Metropolitan Police but no arrests have been made.
