LONDON/STRASBOURG - Prime Minister Theresa May clinched legally binding Brexit assurances with the European Union on Monday in a last ditch attempt to win over rebellious British lawmakers who have threatened to vote down her divorce deal again.
The changes address the most contentious part of the divorce deal she agreed in November - the insurance policy aimed at avoiding controls on the sensitive border between the British province of Northern Ireland and EU member Ireland, known as the"backstop". In a news conference in Strasbourg, May said that in addition to a joint instrument and a joint statement announced earlier in parliament, Britain would also make a Unilateral Declaration on the so-called backstop – an insurance policy aimed at avoiding a hard border on the island of Ireland.
He said that the choice for the British parliament, which has already turned the deal down in January, was either accepting it or risking that Brexit may never happen at all. “The Prime Minister’s negotiations have failed. This evening’s agreement with the European Commission does not contain anything approaching the changes Theresa May promised parliament,” Corbyn said in a statement. “That’s why Members of Parliament must reject this deal tomorrow.”
