, Brittney Griner is working on a memoir about her time in a Russian prison. The memoir, which will be published by Alfred A. Knopf is set to be released next spring.and Baylor before going on to win a pair of Olympic gold medals with Team USA and a WNBA championship with the Phoenix Mercury, was arrested in February 2022 at an airport in Russia where she was playing professionally during the WNBA's offseason. Russian authorities said she had vape cartridges and cannabis oil in her luggage.
"I arrived in Moscow to rejoin the UMMC Ekaterinburg basketball team and was immediately detained at the airport. That day was the beginning of an unfathomable period in my life which only now am I ready to share," Griner said in a statement released by Alfred A. Knopf."The primary reason I traveled back to Russia for work that day was because I wanted to make my wife, family, and teammates proud.
Besides going into detail about those 10 months as a prisoner in Russia, the memoir also promises to delve into the movement back home to get Griner home as well as the pay equity issues that lead women athletes to play professionally abroad. "Brittney Griner has been a trailblazing pioneer in the world of sports for over a decade," said Reagan Arthur, publisher at Alfred A. Knopf."Her memoir recounts not only one of the biggest news stories of 2022 but also centers on a personal story of survival and hope."
