“I was telling Greg before practice that this Ben DiNucci was doing well,” Payton said. “So I told Ben, ‘He owns Walmart. If it doesn’t work out here, there will be, I’m sure, a greeting opportunity somewhere at one of his local stores.’”“It happens. I’d rather it be in a 7-on-7 than a team period,” DiNucci said.
For Payton, though, these days bring something even a little bit more than that. He’s out on the fields of Denver’s training facility in an orange visor for the first time in this capacity since being hired in late January. He’s coaching for the first time, period, since stepping down as New Orleans’ head coach after the 2021 season.
He’s got some familiar faces on staff, but plenty of new ones, too, and as such is paying attention to his own coaches in addition to the players in town for camp.
