Latrell Lewis, 23, called 911 around noon Sunday to report that the baby wasn’t feeling well, a police spokesperson said. When first responders arrived at the apartment on East 68th Street in Bergen Beach, the child was unconscious with bruising on his stomach, police said. The toddler was declared dead at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center.
On Monday, the city Medical Examiner ruled the child died from blunt force trauma to the head and body. Lewis was charged with murder. It’s unclear if the baby’s mother was home at the time. Police said there did not appear to be a history of domestic violence at the address.The toddler’s murder is the latest in a string of violent incidents involving New York City children in the past week., along with their parents, in an Upper West Side apartment. Police are investigating the killings as a murder-suicide.in Sunset Park when their mother’s roommate allegedly attacked them with a hammer.
