One of two Sydney brothers has been found guilty in the Etihad bomb plot, which would have caused Australia’s most catastrophic terror attack.

Khaled Khayat has been convicted of conspiring to plan a terror attack by planting a bomb on a Dubai-bound flight from Sydney.

The bomb, hidden inside a Barbie doll and a meat grinder in carry-on luggage, was intended to explode 20 minutes into a departing Etihad flight over NSW. The plot was foiled when the carry-on bag containing the bomb weighed 3.5kg, too heavy to be checked in for the flight. Khaled Khayat has been found guilty of plotting what would have been the world’s greatest airline disaster and Australia’s worst terror attack.Mahmoud Khayat and Khaled Khayat on trial in Parramatta District Court. Picture: Vincent De Gouw.Had it not been, it would have been Australia’s most catastrophic terror attack, and the world’s worst airline disaster in three decades, outstripping the tragedy of the 239 victims who died on MH370 in 2014.

After more than two days of deliberations, a Sydney jury found Khaled Khayat guilty but have so far been unable to reach a verdict in his brother Mahmoud Khayat’s trial.
