The Herald's view: This is a political budget, but it’s not a big-spending vote-buying budget. The spending strategy is the right call - for now
Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has handed down a federal budget with a heart that offers some important help for Australia’s most vulnerable, but it has dodged the bigger question of what to do about the huge debts Australia has accumulated during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The policy is rightly backed up with much tougher regulations on staffing and quality, reducing the risk that aged care providers will skim off the cash for their profits rather than use it to improve services. Last year Mr Frydenberg said he would try to get back into surplus as soon as the crisis was over to pay back the hole blown in the government’s finances by his one-off $310 billion stimulus.On Tuesday, however, despite prospects for a faster-than-expected economic recovery, he dropped his plans to put on a fiscal hair shirt.
