The findings suggest that less massive galaxies can shine brightly due to intermittent, dazzling bursts of star formation.

The images astounded scientists since the early galaxies seemed extraordinarily bright and enormous, and they appeared to have developed quickly after the Big Bang. Faucher-Giguère added: “Typically, a galaxy is bright because it’s big. But because these galaxies formed at cosmic dawn, not enough time has passed since the Big Bang. How could these massive galaxies assemble so quickly?”

Bursts of star formation explain mysterious brightness at cosmic dawnBursts of star formation explain mysterious brightness at cosmic dawnWhen scientists viewed the James Webb Space Telescope's (JWST) first images of the universe's earliest galaxies, they were shocked. The young galaxies appeared too bright, too massive and too mature to have formed so soon after the Big Bang. It would be like an infant growing into an adult within just a couple years.

It Might Be Binary StarsGamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are some of the most violent events in the universe. Some have a power output equivalent to all of the other stars in the observable universe, at least in the spectrum of gamma rays. But we know very little about them. It might be binary starsGamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are some of the most violent events in the universe. Some have a power output equivalent to all of the other stars in the observable universe, at least in the spectrum of gamma rays. But we know very little about them. A new paper published in The Astrophysical Journal from researchers on an interdisciplinary team from seven countries puts forth a new theory about how at least one type of GRB happens—when a binary of two specific types of stars collapses and forms a black hole.
