California is still working to compile ethnicity data on coronavirus cases as state and national leaders raised concerns Tuesday that African Americans and other minorities are being affected disproportionately

OAKLAND — .

“We're still waiting for all of the data,” Newsom said during his Tuesday press briefing. “Before I make it public and present it, I want it to be accurate.” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti expressed worry Tuesday evening that minorities and low-income residents are suffering most because they have a higher share of preexisting health conditions. Los Angeles County released preliminary information Tuesday that African Americans comprise 17 percent of deaths while they make up 9 percent of the residents.

“Because of the true and unfortunate history of medical maltreatment of different groups of people, but especially African Americans in the United States, there are real issues of trust between the African American community and the health care system,” Harris said, “and that’s why it’s really important for all of us in all of our communities to distribute these messages through our trusted elders, through our trusted messengers within the communities.

Trump said he's directing his administration to release better data on racial disparities in the coming days. Los Angeles Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer added Tuesday that “we will be watching this closely."
