California Surf Museum in Oceanside chosen as No. 2 in USA Today's '10 Best Attractions for Sports Fans' as part of its 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards

The California Surf Museum in Oceanside placed among the top in a nationwide contest, “10 Best Attractions for Sports Fans,” selected by a panel of industry experts and editors at USA Today as part of its 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.

The museum came in just after Boise State University‘s Blue Turf in Boise, Idaho, which was voted No.1 and before the “Field of Dreams” movie site in Dyersville, Iowa, which came in third in the contest. After the museum got word it was nominated for “10 Best Attractions for Sports Fans,” along with 19 other contestants, the nationwide online voting began. Voting was from July 24 to Aug. 21.

“People might not immediately think of surfing as a major sport, but nearly three million Americans are dedicated to it as a way of life that numbers an estimated 23 million participants worldwide. Add to this a fan base of people who don’t surf but love and appreciate the spectacle, sport, tradition, history, and culture of surfing, then our showing begins to make perfect sense,” Kempton said.

“While this award recognizes the California Surf Museum, we feel that it also puts the preservation of surfing history and culture on the national stage alongside more mainstream sports and will benefit all surf museums,” said longtime museum volunteer Tara Lee Torburn, who serves as the California Surf Museum’s creative director.
