Opinion: California targets private, pro-life clinics
These private clinics offer no threat to legal abortions, but provide an alternative to keep the procedure as rare as possible. Yet progressive lawmakers have introduced bills to limit their operations. Two of them failed this year, out of likely concern about litigation, according to CalMatters. The article predicts the centers “will be California’s next abortion battleground.”
In 2015, California passed a law that required these centers to provide clients with information about how to get low-cost contraception and abortion services, thus compelling them to, as the plaintiffs in a legal challenge explained, engage in speech “that is inimical to their beliefs and mission.” The U.S. Supreme Court wisely rejected that law on free-speech grounds. But legislative efforts haven’t stopped.
“They’re the next way in which the anti-abortion movement will try to stop people from getting access to abortion here,” Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, D-San Ramon, told CalMatters. Yet the centers don’t stop anyone from accessing abortion. They provide another choice. We recognize lawmakers’ desire to keep abortion legal, but can’t fathom why they don’t seem to want it to be rare.
