Councillors heard that talented musicians were being driven away from performing in Bolton due to the policy
Bolton is to review its ban on town centre buskers using amplifiers after the issue was brought up by Voice Kids performer Will Edgar. A meeting of the council heard that the current ban is ‘having a negative impact in supporting up and coming local musicians’ who needed to go to other towns or into Manchester to perform.
“Under current council policy we don’t support any busker that uses an amplifier. “This sort of policy, while perhaps well intended, is having a negative impact. “I believe the solution can be found if we look at London where there are designated spots for licensed buskers. “This ensures that people can’t perform just anywhere but also means that those seeking to busk are licensed, ensuring that quality and legitimacy are secured.
