Opening in cinemas on July 25, the sequel is set to officially fold the X-Men superhero team into the MCU.
The Deadpool & Wolverine movie, featuring actors Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, will inject much-needed star power into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had more misses than hits of late. The most recent movie in the superhero franchise, The Marvels , was considered a box-office bomb. It grossed US$206 million worldwide – a stark drop from the US$1.13 billion achieved by its predecessor, Captain Marvel .It is set to officially take the X-Men superhero team – including Deadpool and Wolverine – into the MCU spotlight.
Reynolds, 47, and Jackman, 55, are A-list actors, and they and their iconic anti-hero characters will inject much-needed star power into the MCU. The franchise has lost stars such as American actors Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett Johansson in the last few years. Moreover, Deadpool’s profane, gritty and self-referential humour will be a new and different direction for the MCU – which some critics have decried as creatively stale and formulaic – to explore.The Straits Times correspondent Yamini Chinnuswamy, executive infographic journalist Billy Ker and executive artist Lee Yu Hui – with some help from Deadpool – explore what this sequel to Deadpool and Deadpool 2 might have in store for audiences.
