New York Fashion Week had a Miley Cyrus surprise, a viral Leslie Jones hype girl moment and plenty of bold shapes and colors. Here are a few of the highlights:
It's no secret that the buzz surrounding New York Fashion Week has slowed to a flutter, with America's most experimental designers like Virgil Abloh and Heron Preston ditching the gritty Big Apple in favor of the more pomp displays in Paris and Milan.
"I don't think that wearing hot pink and ruffles or bright yellow, or an intense blue in shapes that take up space make you any less intelligent," John Rogers told NPR before the show."I don't think that the way that you dress should make you sacrifice your personality or your point of view, or necessarily say anything about your intelligence."
But in a positive move, NYFW not only saw more African Americans on the calendar but also talent from Africa presenting their designs. Christian Cowan offered an '80s inspired animal print suit ; Prabal Gurung gave lapels the yin and yang treatment experimenting with a mix of black and whites and even feathers, and bi-coastal cool-kid brand Eckhaus Latta's paid homage to 90s teen queens with mini-skirts and matching cropped blazers in electric hues. Further emphasizing collective efforts to define female dressing in the new decade, most suits featured boxy, structured shoulders.
