A new study shows how brain regions and neural networks add to a person’s general intelligence, supporting the emergence of Network Neuroscience Theory.
The paper's first author, Evan Anderson, now a researcher for Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corp., elaborated that getting a deeper insight into the biology of cognitive abilities calls for "characterizing how individual differences in intelligence and problem-solving ability relate to the underlying architecture and neural mechanisms of brain networks."Theories of intelligence tend to utilize several approaches.
The scientists wanted to capture the great variety of neural networks that are active even when we are resting. As Professor Barbey "Rather than originate from a specific region or network, intelligence appears to emerge from the global architecture of the brain and to reflect the efficiency and flexibility of systemwide network function," Barbey stated in theasked Professor Barbey for more details on their work. We asked how "network neuroscience theory" takes into account the overall architecture of the brain to predict or describe intelligence.
According to Network Neuroscience Theory, "the small-world topology of brain networks enables the rapid reconfiguration of their modular community structure, creating globally coordinated mental representations of a desired goal-state and the sequence of operations required to achieve it."

First-Principles Theory of the Relativistic Magnetic Reconnection Rate in Astrophysical Pair PlasmasWe develop a first-principles model for the relativistic magnetic reconnection rate in strongly magnetized pair plasmas. By considering the energy budget and required current density near the x-line, we analytically show that in the magnetically dominated relativistic regime, the x-line thermal pressure is significantly lower than the upstream magnetic pressure due to the extreme energy needed to sustain the current density, consistent with kinetic simulations. This causes the upstream magnetic field lines to collapse in, producing the open outflow geometry which enables fast reconnection. The result is important for understanding a wide range of extreme astrophysical environments, where fast reconnection has been evoked to explain observations such as transient flares and nonthermal particle signatures.
