Cancer survivor Ash Foo makes an inspiring return to NYFW.

The number of collections walked during Fashion Week isn’t the sole measure of success for models. Just ask Ash Foo, the 23-year-old Canadian beauty whose presence added a touch of cool to shows like Rag & Bone, Jonathan Simkhai, and Adeam this week. At a glance, Foo looks the part of rising-star model, lithe and pretty with an on-trend buzz cut, she fit right in alongside It girls like Candice Swanepoel and Hanne Gaby Odiele as she made her way down the runway.

Foo was four years into a successful career when she started to notice small changes in her body. “I was bloated, and at first, I thought it was due to my period, so I thought nothing of it,” she explains. “It didn’t go away for two months, but there were no other symptoms.” Given her Canadian roots, Foo decided to wait until she was back home and had access to the nation’s free health care to inspect further.

With multiple tests, surgeries, and chemotherapy all becoming part of her new normal, Foo credits her access to free health care with saving her life. “The ability to see my doctor and just check to see if I’m okay is not something I have here in New York,” she says. “And if I didn’t have that in Canada, I might have left things alone and continued to ignore the problem. This could have ended very differently.
