The “Star Trek” actor's life-like image appeared at a Sydney conference while he was in California. Read more at straitstimes.com.

LOS ANGELES - More than half a century after he materialised on far-flung planets as Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise, Mr William Shatner has beamed into a distant land in a demonstration of hologram technology.

The tech, produced by Los Angeles-based Proto, displays a high definition 2D image that uses shadows to create a volumetric illusion of three dimensions. “There’s always jeopardy when there’s new technology,” the 92-year-old shrugged when his image appeared inside the device in Sydney moments later. Canadian Shatner became a cult star in the wake of the 1960s sci-fi adventure “Star Trek”, which follows the crew of a spaceship as it spreads liberal humanitarian ideals through the galaxy on a mission “to boldly go where no man has gone before”.
