The homeless crisis is an issue not only in the city of San Diego, but other communities within the county. Last week, the city of Carlsbad was awarded a $2 million grant to help expand its only homeless shelter.
La Posada started in 1992 as housing for farmworkers and expanded to house homeless men.
Like Craig-Mifflin, Michael Weidekemper, who’s lived at La Posada for nearly four months, struggles with his mental health. Reflecting on life before coming to La Posada, Weidekemper said, “That’s just cause I got into a deep depression, very deep, and I started drinking and drinking and it wasn’t going good.”
“I just like it here. There are nice beds and it’s close to work. I can ride my bike to work," he said. “I just hope it keeps going this good, 'cause now I have a purpose in life and it makes a big difference. Everybody needs a second chance and if you can get into a place where you have a nice roof over your head and you feel safe, that’s going to make you more productive," he said.
