Floodwaters were rising in South Carolina as a strengthened Hurricane Dorian approached the state's coast early Thursday.
Winds of up to 68 mph were recorded at the Charleston, South Carolina, international airport by 5 a.m. ET, according to the National Weather Service. Tens of thousands of households and businesses were without power and roads were closed by flooding,In North Carolina, meanwhile, Gov. Roy Cooper urged people to take seriously mandatory evacuation orders for all of the state's barrier islands.
