Numbness and mild tingling in the fingers – specifically the thumb, index and middle fingers – at night and first thing in the morning are among early symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, a common condition caused by repetitive activities that stress the hand and wrist.
Working long hours on a computer and prolonged use of vibrating/power tools can put pressure on the median nerve which passes through the carpal tunnel, a narrow channel in the wrist, on its way from the forearm to the hand. At a severe stage, the muscles at the base of your thumb may shrink and your hand may become extremely weak and lose all sensation. However, the condition typically resolves on its own post-pregnancy.
