RSV primarily affects the respiratory system, particularly in older people, young children and individuals with weakened immune systems. The disease is spread through respiratory droplets and is highly contagious. In the United States each year, RSV leads to as many as 80,000 hospitalizations in children younger than 5 and up to 160,000 hospitalizations in adults 65 and older,by the Food and Drug Administration in July to help protect infants from the disease.
