Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a rather last-minute change to all of its cutscenes.

When you read about game development, you hear about things that sound like minor changes, but end up being massively tough technical challenges that teams freak out over. If I had to guess, the news that CDPR is now making allThe news has been confirmed by CDPR Community LeadI feel like this has to be a massive amount of work, as scripting cutscenes as third-person and changing that all to first-person requires a lot of different variables.

The immediate question this has raised among the community is how this dramatically reduces the time you actually see your character onscreen, making CDPR’s elaborate and rather beautiful character creator feel much less important than it was yesterday. I find it hilarious that they’re saying you’ll see your character “in mirrors” like that’s supposed to help, along with menus, driving and “very occasionally” actual cutscenes.

shows your player character in cutscenes sometimes. So again, it’s hard to see how this “benefits storytelling” as I have always found third person cutscenes better in that regard. An additional follow-up question is how say, the promised romance or sex scenes in the game will be handled if everything is in first person. Even the simple act of something like say, kissing someone would now be super awkward in first person, though perhaps less so for…other activities. But it’s possible those scenes could be one of the few that remain in third-person, who knows.

This change strikes me as pretty weird and last minute, and probably a time or cost-saving move for a company that is generally not known for time or cost-saving moves. Maybe it will all be fine, but initially, yes, it does seem like the game is losing something buy no longer showing the player character nearly as much as before, which has not been the case in many of the game’s promotional videos to date.
