The win on Cameron Dicker’s 43-yard kick with :04 on the clock elevates the Chargers in the AFC wild-card race.
INGLEWOOD — The Chargers took a grinding 17-14 victory Sunday from the Tennessee Titans at SoFi Stadium that lacked style but had plenty of substance and kept them in the midst of a crowded chase for an AFC wild-card spot.Ryan Tannehill’s quarterback sneak from the 1-yard line and Randy Bullock’s extra point tied it 14-14 with 48 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
Austin Ekeler’s 3-yard touchdown run broke a 7-7 tie with 10:28 left in the game. Justin Herbert set up the scoring play with a 31-yard pass to Keenan Allen that gave the Chargers the ball at the Titans’ 15-yard line. Ekeler ran for 12 yards on the next play, to the 3-yard line. The Chargers took a 7-0 lead on Joshua Kelley’s one-yard touchdown run with 4:25 left in the first quarter, driving the ball down the Titans’ throats with an effective running game. The Titans countered with Derrick Henry’s four-yard scoring run with 10:09 remaining in the half.
Tennessee lost Tannehill briefly after he injured his ankle on a one-run scramble on the Titans’ first drive of the game. He was said to be questionable to return to the game. Malik Willis, a rookie, replaced Tannehill, who then returned to the game and directed the second-quarter scoring drive. The third quarter was scoreless and the teams went to the fourth tied 7-7. The Chargers haven’t scored a touchdown since their 30-28 victory over the Cleveland Browns in Week 5 more than two months ago. The Chargers haven’t managed more than one field in a third quarter since then.
