The Chicago Blackhawks and a former player who said he was sexually assaulted by an assistant coach have settled a lawsuit that shook up the NHL.

“The Blackhawks hope that this resolution will bring some measure of peace and closure for Mr. Beach,” a statement attributed to Rocky and Danny Wirtz, and Susan Loggans, Beach’s attorney, said.

The Blackhawks said as late as mid-May that Beach’s allegations lacked merit. However, an independent review, commissioned by the team and released in October, found that the organization badly mishandled Beach’s allegations.for its past dismissal, saying in a statement: “We apologize to Kyle Beach for previously stating his allegations ‘lacked merit.’ It is clear now that our organization did not do the right thing.

Beach told investigators that Aldrich, a video coach at the time, threatened him with a souvenir baseball bat before forcibly performing oral sex on him and masturbating on the player’s back, allegations that he also detailed in his lawsuit. During those three weeks, Aldrich continued to work for and travel with the team. Schar said Aldrich was also accused of having “made an unwanted sexual advance” toward a 22-year-old Blackhawks intern.
