Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry in HongKong hits out at ex-governor Chris Patten's remarks

BEIJING - An official in charge of the Office of the Commissioner of China's Foreign Affairs Ministry Hong Kong has condemned Mr Chris Patten, former British governor of Hong Kong, over"absurd" remarks on the Hong Kong situation, urging him to respect the facts and stop"lying and misbehaving."

Mr Patten cannot deny the fact that Hong Kong people have changed from"second class" in the colonial period and are now enjoying democratic rights and freedoms according to law that were not available in the colonial period, the official said. When recalling the violent acts in the vicinity of the Legislative Council Complex in Hong Kong last Monday , the official said violence is violence and no claim can be used as an excuse for extreme violence.

Responding to Mr Patten's repeated remarks on the Sino-British Joint Declaration, the official said that as Hong Kong returned to the motherland, the rights and obligations of the British side under the Joint Declaration were completely fulfilled.
