Chinese leader Xi Jinping met with Taiwan's former leader Ma Ying-jeou in Beijing to discuss unification, stating that external interference would not stop China from reunifying with Taiwan.

“There is no force that can separate us... Differences in systems cannot change the objective fact that we belong to one nation and one people,” Mr Xi was shown telling Mr Ma across a glossy table in an ornate reception room in the capital.Mr Ma has been leading a delegation of 20 Taiwanese students and has visited technology firms, universities and historical sites since arriving in China last week.
“Chinese people on both sides of the strait absolutely have ample wisdom to peacefully handle disputes and avoid conflicts,” said Mr Ma, adding that they should also “oppose Taiwan independence”. He oversaw an improvement in cross-strait ties and held a landmark summit with Mr Xi in Singapore in 2015, the first meeting between the political leaders of China and Taiwan since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949.
